Marina von Weissenberg, Finland

I serve as the IUCN Regional Councillor for West Europe and the National Focal Point for the Convention on Biological Diversity in Finland. I have worked at the Ministry of the Environment for the last 18 years as an expert in policy and biodiversity.

Since 1996 I have worked with IUCN and am presently a member of the IUCN National Committee of Finland. Until 2010 I chaired the IUCN Committee and before that, served as Secretary. I have broad experience in implementing policies in conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity with different stakeholders. Nature protection overall is important to me. 'Better Nature, Better People'

I would be happy to continue as Regional Councillor for West Europe.

My vision for IUCN:

Biodiversity considerations must be integrated more fully into different societal sectors. Information and knowledge generation and making full use of the Congress' decisions will lead to solutions; IUCN's core entities, Members and Commissions are crucial in this. 2013–2016 is a critical period for reaching the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

More rapid progress is needed in fulfilling environmental commitments. The underlying causes of biodiversity loss must be addressed clearly to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems.

IUCN's role is crucial for our planet.
