Pakistan National Committee of IUCN Members

IUCN Pakistan National Committee (PNC) had overall eleven (11) meetings between December 2008 and June 2012. During this period the PNC also frequently organised the Executive Committee meetings and a special consultative session to discuss and debate key strategic issues related to the environment and sustainable development and their effective solutions, interaction amongst members for mutual initiatives and collaborative opportunities for conservation of environment.

Following a terrorist attack in Mumbai the tension between India and Pakistan and war like situation was risen on the border of both counties. PNC adopted a resolution in its meeting on December 01, 2008. The resolution requested both the countries to resolve the issue through dialogue and peaceful means.

A dedicated blog for the PNC Members was set up for showcasing the activities of the Members and enhancing interaction amongst Members.

Election of the PNC National Committee took place in 2009

The PNC members appreciated the action of the Balochistan cabinet for revoking allotment of a chunk of land of Hingol National Park to the Pakistan Air Force. Role of Government of Balochistan was acknowledged by the PNC and a letter of appreciation was written by the Chairperson of the PNC.

On May 2011 the PNC Members adopted a resolution condemning the brutal murder of the two environmental activists Mr. Abdul Ghani, General Secretary of Pakistan Fisher Folks and an associate Haji Abu Bakar by the land mafia. These activists were very active related to the protection of coastal mangroves. Mr. Javed Jabbar, Regional Councilor along with WWF-Pakistan and IUCN staff visited the bereaved families to show solidarity with the families of the murdered activists.

Election of the New Pakistan National Committee took place in 2011.

  • Planning and Development Department, FATA became member in 2008
  • Planning and Development Department, Balochistan became member in 2010
  • Taraqee Foundation became member in 2010
  • Trust for Conservation of Coastal Resources became member in 2011
  • Two new organizations aim to be admitted in the forthcoming IUCN Council’s meeting.

2. Project: “National Impact Assessment Programme” (NIAP) – partners: Ministry of Climate Change and IUCN. Duration from 2009 to 2014.

3. Project: “Capacity Assessment for Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing and Preservation of Traditional Knowledge in Pakistan”. Partners: Ministry of Climate and IUCN. Change Duration March 2011 to March 2012.

4. Project: “Pakistan Sustainable Transport Project” (PAKSTRAN). Partners: Planning and Development Department, Punjab and IUCN. Duration from 2011 to 2016.

5. Project: “Free and Fare Elections Network” (FAFEN), partners: SUNGI, Khwendo Kor, Strengthening Partnership Organisation, Baanhn Beli.

6. Six (6) PNC Members are included in the National Coordinating Body of Mangroves For the Future (MFF).
