I have been an active member of the Commission on Environmental Law and Co-Chair of the Specialist Group on Oceans, Coasts and Coral Reefs of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law since 2006. My activities have included working on governance issues with the IUCN Mediterranean Center and the Global Marine Programme.

Through this experience I have had the opportunity to observe the important and unique place of the IUCN in working with different sectors of society, including governments, scientists, NGOs and local people. IUCN serves as an important bridge of knowledge and trust among different sectors of society.

As Regional Councillor, my efforts will be to promote and strengthen the role of the IUCN in its work with different sectors as well as in different regions in the world to achieve nature based conservation solutions as part of sustainable development goals to ensure a lasting and healthy future. An important part of my role as Regional Councilor will be in communicating the Mission of the IUCN and developing relationships that will promote this Mission. In particular I would like to advance the role of the IUCN in developing and strengthening legal capacity and the role of law in conservation.
