IUCN celebrates key achievement of the 2012 World Conservation Congress

Representatives from the Ministry of Environment and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea, together with IUCN Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre unveiled the Jeju Declaration commemorative plaque at IUCN Headquarters in Switzerland last Friday, emphasizing their commitment to continued cooperation with IUCN following the successful 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress.

The Jeju Declaration captures the essence of the IUCN Programme 2013-2016. It highlights its three programme areas focusing on valuing and conserving nature, effective and equitable governance of nature’s use and deploying nature-based solutions to global challenges in climate, food and development.

“The Jeju Declaration is one of the great outcomes of the IUCN World Conservation Congress held in September 2012 on the beautiful island of Jeju,” says IUCN Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre. “It reflects all key elements of the IUCN Programme and demonstrates the commitment of our Korean host to continue our partnership and pursue our joint vision of a just world that values and conserves nature.”

“Thanks to the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress, not only the people in Jeju but also the Korean government realized how important nature conservation is to human beings,” said Kim Sun Woo, Vice Governor for Economy and Environment, Jeju Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea. “IUCN, the Jeju government and the Korean government have used this opportunity to commit to continued cooperation to make the world a better place.”
