Two candidates are in the running to host the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress, having submitted formal proposals: Honolulu, Hawaii, United States of America, and Istanbul, Turkey.

The two candidates have submitted formal proposals detailing how their venues and cities meet the criteria in the Statement of Requirements and demonstrating how they would prove to be fantastic destinations for the 2016 Congress.

The IUCN Congress provides a unique opportunity to promote and demonstrate leadership on global environmental issues and priorities through the profiling of national conservation programmes and activities, as well as linkages to other sectors of government and the economy.

Site visits will take place in the coming months and the IUCN Council will take a decision regarding the venue in the first half of 2014.

IUCN welcomes the interest of Honolulu and Istanbul and looks forward to working with both candidates. The successful host will follow in the steps of Jeju, Republic of Korea.
