World Leaders Dialogues

The World Leaders Dialogues are “prime time” high-level sessions during the IUCN World Conservation Congress. They feature internationally recognized experts, politicians and CEOs in a series of five moderated public debates that tackle the most strategic issues related to conservation and sustainable development.

During the 2012 IUCN Congress, the Dialogues were organized under the auspices of the Korean Government and the President of IUCN. With high media exposure, and innovative techniques, these 90-minute sessions offer strategic thinking to guide the implementation of practical solutions for a sustainable future.

Media headlines are filled with stories of individuals achieving significant change, be they politicians, CEOs, NGO activists or religious leaders. Whatever their walk of life, these are people who, through their personal achievements, their day-to-day work or their charisma, can influence others and translate words into actions.

During the 2012 IUCN Congress, these exceptional people were asked to share their thoughts about possible solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges.

When, where and how?

The five World Leaders Dialogues were held during the World Conservation Congress's Forum, from 7 to 11 September, one every day from 17:00 to 18:30. The format fostered debate between five to six internationally-recognized experts, moderated by a leading environmental journalist.

Audience participation was made possible thanks to innovative methods, allowing participants to interact with the panelists and the moderator by posting their comments and questions through an on-line system (Twitter-like). Video relays of the sessions were broadcast throughout the Congress venue and relevant Internet channels and can be viewed here.
