Giving life to the Amazon vision!

Having nine countries working together to put protected areas to the service of society might not be easy. RedParques, WWF and IUCN believe it's possible and they have developed a 10-year action plan to protect the iconic Amazon Basin with the invovelment of indigenous peoples’.

IUCN interviewed Claudio Maretti, member of IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas.

Tell us about the importance of the indigenous peoples in the conservation of the Amazon.

The Amazon Basin, stretching over Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, contains the world’s largest tropical rainforest, and is home to more than 30 million people, covering about 8,235,430 km2 with dense tropical forest.
